Around 20 trophies stolen from Red Bull's factory 10 days ago have been found in a lake near Sandhurst, but the whereabouts of a further 40 pieces of silverware are still unknown.
The stolen trophies, accrued largely over four championship-winning seasons from 2010 to 2013, were discovered by a member of the public in Horseshoe Lake. A gang of six men used a 4x4 to ram the front entrance of the team’s factory in Milton Keynes at around 1.30am on Dec 6.
Those found, which did not include the F1 drivers’ championship and constructors’ titles, were badly damaged, Thames Valley Police said.
Following the discovery on Tuesday Christian Horner, the team principal, said: “The fact that some of the trophies were discarded in a lake and damaged shows how senseless this crime was. While the trophies mean an enormous amount to the team, their intrinsic value is low – and the extent of the damage that was caused to the factory by the offenders during the break-in was significant. Hopefully we can get the trophies back to our factory where they belong and get replicas made of those that we can’t.”
After the break-in Horner warned that the team would be forced to reconsider their current open policy regarding members of the public. “The actions of these men mean it’s likely that we will have to make our site less accessible in the future, which will be unfair on the hundreds of fans that travel to visit our factory each year to see our trophies and our Formula One car,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ferrari announced last night a major shakeup of their technical team after a disastrous 2014. The Italian team ended the year with two podiums, losing Fernando Alonso in the process. They are now on their third team principal in a year, with Mauriozio Arrivabene recently taking over, and the Italian has wasted no time restructuring the ailing outfit.
Pat Fry, the engineering director who joined from McLaren in 2010, has left while Nikolas Tombazis, the chief designer, has also lost his job.
