Lagi, Kim Kardashian Pose Tanpa Busana di Pemotretan Terbaru

Jakarta - Sudah berkali-kali Kim Kardashian berpose tanpa busana untuk pemotretan majalah. Dalam jangka waktu setahun ini, Kim sudah melakukan beberapa pemotretan yang memperlihatkan seluruh lekuk tubuh seksinya, seperti ketika tampil di majalah Love dan Paper.

Kali ini Kim kembali tampil tanpa busana dalam sebuah video pemotretan. Bukan untuk sebuah majalah tapi dalam trailer terbaru Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Selebriti 34 tahun itu menyatakan dengan bangga bahwa ia telah melakukan pemotretan tanpa sehelai benang pun.

Video yang mempromosikan episode terbaru dari serial reality show tersebut diunggah oleh sang ibunda, Kris Jenner, lewat Twitter dan Instagram. Video klip singkat itu memperlihatkan Kim yang sedang melakukan pemotretan tanpa busana di sebuah studio.

"Are you dolls ready? she wrote. The day is finally here!!! Season Premiere of #KUWTK TONIGHT at 9/8c on E!" tulisnya di Instagram.

Istri Kanye West ini berpose di depan fottografer sambil menutupi kedua payudara serta bagian intimnya dengan tangan. Rambut Kim belum dicat blonde seperti sekarang masih berwarna hitam pekat. Tubuh seksi ibu satu anak itu masih tampak mulus dengan lekuknya yang ideal.

Kim mengaku bahwa ia memang ingin melakukan pemotretan tanpa busana sebelum hamil anak kedua. "Jika dalam waktu dekat aku hamil lagi maka tubuhku akan benar-benar berubah. Jadi aku memutuskan untuk melakukan pemotretan hari ini tanpa busana," ujarnya dalam video promosi Keeping Up with the Kardashians terbaru.

Fotografer mengabadikan foto Kim tanpa busana dengan ekspresi wajah berbeda-beda. Kim membiarkan rambutnya tergerai berantakan agar terlihat alami. Di akhir video terlihat Kim membalut tubuhnya dengan baju handuk putih untuk melihat hasil bidikan sang fotografer.

Kim Kardashian Pakaikan Anaknya Lensa Kontak?

dok. Instagram Jakarta - Setiap harinya, keluarga Kardashian selalu saja membuat kejutan di media sosialnya. Setelah Kris Jenner membuat heboh Instagram dengan memamerkan video Kim tanpa busana beberapa waktu lalu, kini istri Kanye West itu sendiri yang membuat sensasi di akun Instagramnya.

Kim mengunggah dua foto North West dengan warna mata yang berubah. Apakah Kim memasangkan lensa kontak untuk putri kecilnya itu? Dalam foto pertama, tampak Nori, sapaan akrab balita 21 bulan itu tampil dengan bola mata berwarna biru. Di foto kedua, si kecil berubah penampilan dengan warna mata hijau.

Dalam keterangan fotonya, Kim menjelaskan bahwa si kecil tidak mengenakan lensa kontak. Kim hanya iseng mengedit warna mata Nori dengan aplikasi pengubah warna mata. "Baby Wolfie #NoTheseAreNOTContacts #JustAnEditISawOnline," begitu penjelasan Kim dalam foto terbarunya itu.

Meski kedua foto tersebut mendapatkan like hingga ribuan, namun perubahan warna mata Nori tersebut juga mendapatkan dikritik oleh beberapa orang di Instagram. Mereka menganggap bahwa Kim sebagai ibu tidak puas dengan penampilan putrinya sendiri yang bahkan belum berusia dua tahun.

"She is not even 2 years old yet and her mom is already doing this," kata salah satu pengguna Instagram. "She's cute as is. let it be. So obsessed with changing who you are. learn to love your self," komentar pengguna Instagram lainnya.

Nori bisa dibilang salah satu anak selebriti yang kerap menuai kontroversi karena ulah Kim yang kerap mendandaninya layaknya orang dewasa. Beberapa waktu lalu, Kim dan Kanye sempat diprotes karena memakaikan Nori jaket bulu yang diduga dibuat dari bulu hewan.

"North bukanlah aksesori. Dia tidak seharusnya mendadaninya dengan busana couture yang buruk," begitu kata Sharon Osbourne yang ikut membela organisasi PETA dalam wawancara dengan majalah Closer.

Momen Langka Jolie-Pitt Mesra Berciuman di Depan Publik

Setelah Zahara dan Shiloh selesai bermain sepakbola, layaknya orangtua yang bangga dengan anaknya, keduanya memeluk mereka. Dua anak perempuan Jolie dan Pitt itu pun tampak bahagia karena latihan ditunggui kedua orangtuanya.

Jolie dan Pitt terakhir terlihat berciuman adalah pada foto pernikahan mereka yang ditampilkan ke media, Agustus 2014. Pasangan ini melangsungkan pernikahan mereka pada 23 Agustus 2014 di Prancis setelah delapan tahun hidup bersama dan memiliki enam anak.

Dalam sebuah wawancara dengan media Australia, Women's Weekly, Jolie pernah mengatakan membangun sebuah pernikahan dan membesarkan anak bukanlah sebuah hal yang mudah.

"Diperlukan kerja keras untuk menjaga hubungan pernikahan dan membesarkan anak. Pitt dan aku benar-benar berusaha menjaga keluarga kami, memastikan semua orang baik-baik saja dan kami tetap dekat," kata aktris 39 tahun itu.

Jadi Model Playboy, Azealia Banks Ngomel Tentang Rasisme

Jakarta - Selama ini, imej majalah Playboy begitu kental di benak para pria dewasa yang mengagumi keindahan tubuh wanita. Namun belakangan publik figur yang dijadikan model sampul juga diwawancara seputar hal-hal yang berat bobotnya. Penyanyi Azealia Banks yang baru berusia 23 tahun pun menjadi model sampul edisi terbaru dan ‘ngomel’ soal perlakuan rasisme yang sering diterimanya.

“Aku benci segala sesuatunya tentang negara ini,” ujar penyanyi rap yang lahir di Manhattan dan besar di Harlem, New York. Opini ini nampaknya menjadi benang merah seluruh wawancara karena dari seluruh wawancara yang dikutip dari majalah pria dewasa tersebut, ia hanya berceloteh soal rasisme, perlakuan tak adil dan membanding-bandingkan sesama musisi rap yang berkulit putih.

“Aku benci orang Amerika kulit putih yang gemuk,” ujarnya. Ia kemudian menambahkan bahwa orang-orang berkulit putih yang gemuk adalah yang paling rasis dan konservatif dan mereka hanya hidup di peternakannya sendiri. Ia juga menyebutkan bahwa remaja perempuan yang bekerja di Kmart memiliki nenek yang rasis dan baginya itu terlalu Amerika.

Jika ditelusuri ke akun Twitter miliknya, ternyata ia memang hobi mengomel tentang segala hal yang tidak disukainya. Mulai dari penyanyi rap berkulit putih asal Australia, Iggy Azalea, pria-pria gay hingga keturunan orang yang memperkerjakan para budak kulit hitam. Tak terelakkan, ia dijuluki wanita pemarah, namun di wawancara ini ia membela diri bahwa dirinya hanya menyuarakan pendapat di negara yang bebas.

Keberaniannya menyindir atau menyebut nama orang lain di komentar bisa dibilang membuatnya memiliki banyak musuh. Sebut saja Lorde yang juga sempat disebutnya. Menurutnya, ketika Lorde ‘mengomel’ dan menjelek-jelekkan orang lain lewat lirik lagu, orang tidak menyebutnya marah. Sedangkan ketika dirinya melakukan hal yang sama, orang langsung menilai dirinya pemarah dan negatif.

Wanita kelahiran 31 Mei 1991 ini memang memiliki masa lalu yang buruk. Dalam sebuah wawancara ia mengaku semasa kecil, ia dan saudari-saudarinya sering dipukul oleh ibunya sendiri dengan tongkat kasti, dibenturkan kepalanya ke tembok dan membiarkan mereka lapar. Di umur 14 tahun, ia melarikan diri dari rumah dan kemudian tinggal dengan kakak tertuanya.

Terbukti memiliki suara yang indah, Tatjana saat ini belum terpikir untuk menjalani karir sebagai penyanyi. Meski demikian dia tidak menolak jika memang di masa depan ada tawaran untuk berkarir di dunia tarik suara.

Selain menyanyi, bakat lain yang diam-diam juga dimiliki bintang film 'Runaway' itu adalah menulis. Tatjana senang menceritakan pengalaman atau apa yang sedang dirasakannya di sebuah blog. Namun karena kesibukannya sekarang, blog tersebut sedikit terbengkalai. Apalagi kini dia sedang berusaha untuk menerbitkan sebuah novel.

Digugat Cerai, Suami Tuduh Pamela Anderson Pembunuh Berantai Bayi

Permintaannya tersebut kini menjadi bumerang untuknya. Dalam surat dokumen yang diajukannya terungkap sang suami menuduhnya sebagai pembunuh berantai bayi.

Situs hiburan yang sering mendapatkan dokumen pengadilan selebriti, TMZ, mendapatkan informasi mengenai tuduhan Rick itu. Dalam dokumen pengadilan Pamela itu disertakan juga isi email dari Rick. Email menjadi kelengkapan dokumennya karena dalam surat elektronik itu terungkap bagaimana 'membahayakannya' pria pemain poker itu bagi sang aktris.

Selain kata-kata yang bernada ancaman, email dari Rick rupanya juga mengungkapkan hal lain yang justru bisa menjatuhkan Pamela. Dalam emailnya, Rick menyebut sang istri sebagai serial baby killer atau pembunuh bayi berantai.

"Aku tidak tahu dia seorang pembunuh berantai bayi dari suaminya. Dia seharusnya dipenjara," demikian tulisan Rick. Pria itu juga mengklaim bintang Baywatch tersebut pernah memohon padanya untuk hamil saat mereka menikah untuk pertamakalinya pada 2007. Namun setelah hamil, wanita 47 tahun itu menggugurkan kandungannya.

Dalam sebuah pesan teks yang dikirimkan Rick pada Pamela diketahui juga pria itu menuduh istrinya pernah menggugurkan kandungan saat menikah dengan Kid Rock. "Aku dengar kamu juga memohon agar hamil anaknya. Aku juga dengar sudah dua kali kamu hamil anaknya," demikian tulisan di pesan teks tersebut. Pamela memang pernikah dengan Kid Rock pada Agustus 2006 dan bercerai Februari 2007.

Email Rick juga berisi sindirannya pada Pamela yang dikenal sebagai aktivisi organisasi pecinta hewan PETA. Dia menyebut sebenarnya mantan model Playboy itu tidaklah seperti apa yang selama ini ditampilkannya di publik sebagai sosok yang melindungi binatang. Rick mengatakan Pamela pernah memasak daging babi untuk anaknya. Dia juga masih makan daging hewan yaitu ikan dan udang.

Email dan pesan teks dari pria 47 tahun itu dianggap Pamela sebagai ancaman yang bisa membahayakan dirinya. Oleh karena itulah dia menyertakan email dan pesan teks tersebut sebagai bukti bahwa pria itu harus diperintahkan tidak boleh berada di dekatnya.

Sebelumnya diberitakan dalam dokumen yang diajukan ke pengadilan Jumat (13/3/2015), Pamela merasa khawatir atas perilaku Rick yang suka melakukan kekerasan. Ibu dua anak itu menyebutkan salah satu tindakan kasar Rick terhadap dirinya terjadi pada Januari 2015. Pria itu membekap wajahnya dengan bantal saat mereka bercinta. Rick juga kerap menghinanya dengan memanggilnya sebagai 'pelacur' saat kesal.

Jamie Dornan Minta Gaji Naik 7 Kali Lipat untuk Fifty Shades of Grey 2?

Pemeran Christian Grey itu memastikan diri kembali lagi bermain di film yang diangkat dari novel karya E.L. James berikutnya, Fifty Shades of Darker dan Fifty Shades of Freed. Hanya saja ada satu permintaan yang diajukannya. Jamie disebut-sebut meminta bayarannya naik tujuh kali lipat dari sebelumnya.

Hollywood Reporter melaporkan bukan hanya Jamie yang meminta naik gaji untuk sekuel Fifty Shades of Grey. Lawan mainnya, Dakota Johnson, juga mengajukan tuntutan yang sama.

"Ini memang negosiasi paling mendasar," kata seorang sumber mengenai kontrak kerja Jamie dan Dakota.

Kenaikan gaji ini diminta keduanya karena mereka yakin sekuel Fifty of Shades Grey juga dinantikan seperti film pertamanya. Mereka berkaca pada film Twilight dan Hunger Games, dua layar lebar yang sekuelnya juga laris diserbu penonton.

Saat membintangi Fifty Shades of Grey, Jamie dan Dakota disebut-sebut menerima bayaran masing-masing US$ 250 ribu atau sekitar Rp 3,3 miliar, Artinya kalau mereka meminta kenaikan tujuh kali lipat, gaji yang akan didapat mencapai US$ 1,75 juta atau sekitar Rp 23 miliar.

Jamie sendiri sudah membantah gosip yang mengatakan dirinya menolak membintangi sekuel Fifty Shades of Grey karena istrinya tidak suka melihat adegan seksnya di layar lebar tersebut. "Tentu saja dia sebelumnya sudah membaca skenario film itu dan sangat mendukung (aku) membintangi Fifty Shades," ujar aktor 32 tahun itu dalam wawancara dengan Mail Online.

Fifty Shades of Grey diproduksi dengan biaya US$ 40 juta. Setelah dirilis pada Februari 2015, film yang disutradarai Sam Taylor-Johnson itu sukses merajai box office. Pendapatan dari box office seluruh dunia layar lebar tersebut sampai saat ini diperkirakan mencapai US$ 528 juta.

Istri Kanye West ini dikatakan Nikki menyukai segala tentang J-Lo termasuk lagu-lagunya seperti 'If You Had My Love' yang menjadi lagu favorit Kim ketika remaja. Tak hanya keindahan bokong, Kim juga sangat memperhatikan bentuk hidungnya. Ia tidak menyukai bentuk hidungnya yang kecil dan tidak sempurna.

Nikki pun mengingat-ingat masa lalu saat sering bermain dengan ibu satu itu di usia 13 tahun. Ia mengatakan di usia yang masih belia mereka sudah mencoba segala jenis diet untuk mendapatkan bentuk tubuh ideal.

Wanita Thailand Bisa Masuk Penjara karena Foto Selfie Payudara Ngintip

Dok. Rihanna Jakarta - Selfie kini semakin beragam. Bukan hanya wajah kini bagian-bagian tubuh lainnya pun jadi obyek selfie khusus para pecinta jejaring sosial. Setelah perut, jari kaki dan tangan, kini marak juga underboob selfie atau memamerkan bagian bawah payudara.

Foto selfie yang seolah-olah membuat payudara mengintip dari balik busana ini cukup banyak dilakukan wanita di Instagram. Apalagi ada selebriti seperti Rihanna yang pernah ikut memamerkan foto serupa.

Tren underboob selfie ini kini menjadi perhatian pemerintah Thailand. Pemerintah negeri gajah putih itu memberikan peringatan pada para wanita untuk tidak mengunggah foto selfie payudara mengintip ini ke situs jejaring sosial mereka. Menurut pemerintah Thailand, underboob selfie bisa dikategorikan pelanggaran undang-undang teknologi yang dibuat pada 2007.

Pada undang-undang tersebut tertulis hal apapun yang bisa menyebabkan gangguan keamanan negara atau menyebabkan kepanikan publik atau data komputer yang mengandung pornografi dan bisa diakses publik, terlarang untuk dilakukan. Menurut pemerintah, pelanggaran atas hal tersebut terancam hukuman lima tahun penjara.

"Saat orang-orang melakukan underboob selfies, tidak ada yang bisa melihat wajah mereka. Jadi kita tidak bisa mengetahui siapa pemilik foto ini dan ini dapat mendorong orang lain melakukan tindakan yang sama," ujar juru bicara pemerintah Anandha Chouchoti pada Reuters.

"Kami hanya bisa memperingatkan masyarakat untuk tidak melakukan hal itu. Tindakan itu tidak pantas dilakukan," tambahnya.

Pemerintah Thailand sebelumnya sering diprotes oleh masyarakatnya karena terlalu berlebihan dalam melakukan sensor terhadap film, musik, acara televisi dan budaya Barat lainnya. Penyensoran itu dilakukan untuk mempertahankan kebudayaan tradisional negara yang terkenal dengan kehidupan malamnya dan lady boy tersebut.

Meski banyak yang menganggap Jelena yang meniru Kim, namun penyanyi itu tetap berpendapat bahwa Kim yang terinspirasi darinya. "Menurutku stylist-nya yang terinspirasi dari halaman Instagramku, bukan Kim. Aku tak punya seorang stylist, aku melakukan semua ini dengan caraku," ujarnya kepada US Weekly.

Gugat Cerai Suami Pelaku KDRT, Pamela Anderson Minta Perlindungan Hukum

Dok. Getty Images Jakarta - Aktris Pamela Anderson yang baru saja menggugat cerai suaminya, Rick Salomon, meminta perlindungan hukum. Pamela ingin pengadilan memberikan perintah pada Rick untuk tidak berada di dekatnya karena dia khawatir dipukuli oleh Rick.

Permintaan agar Rick mendapat perintah menjauh darinya itu diajukan Pamela ke pengadilan pada Jumat (13/3/2015). Permintaan tersebut akan dibahas dalam sidang yang dijadwalkan digelar 3 April 2015, demikian People melaporkan.

Dalam dokumen yang dibuat Pamela, wanita 47 tahun itu menyebut perilaku Rick yang suka melakukan kekerasan sudah semakin parah. Sehingga dia takut akan apa yang bisa dilakukan pria tersebut terhadap dirinya.

"Perilakunya tidak bisa diduga, di luar kontrol dan membuatku mengkhawatirkan keselamatan diriku," demikian pernyataan Pamela dalam dokumennya. Sikap buruk Rick itu semakin menjadi-jadi setelah dia menggugat cerai pria tersebut pada Februari 2015.

Pamela menyebutkan salah satu tindakan kasar Rick terhadap dirinya terjadi pada Januari 2015. Pria itu membekap wajahnya dengan bantal saat mereka bercinta. Rick juga kerap menghinanya dengan memanggilnya sebagai 'pelacur' saat kesal.

Tak sampai di situ, setelah gugatan cerai terjadi Rick juga banyak mengirimkan email dan pesan teks pelecehan seksual terhadap Pamela. Dalam email tersebut, disertakan foto bintang Baywatch itu tanpa busana yang pernah diambil diam-diam oleh pria yang berprofesi sebagai pemain poker itu. "Seolah-olah dia menunjukkan bahwa dirinya punya kekuatan untuk mengirimkannya kepada siapapun yang dia inginkan," klaim Pamela.

Hubungan asmara Pamela dan Rick ini sudah berkali-kali melalui diterpa masalah. Keduanya pertamakali menikah pada 2007, namun pernikahan itu dibatalkan dua bulan setelahnya. Mereka kembali bersama setahun kemudian dan menikah kedua kalinya pada Januari 2014. Enam bulan pasca pernikahan itu aktris 47 tahun tersebut menggugat cerai.

A look at Toyota future products: Company focuses on drivetrain technology

 The redesigned 2013 Toyota Avalon gets a roofline that flows to the back of the car.

Toyota has slipped behind competitors in drivetrain technology and now must play catch-up against the likes of Ford, Hyundai and Mazda.

Much of Toyota's lag stems from engineering resources being diverted by the unintended acceleration crisis and other quality miscues in the past two years. Now expect Toyota to focus more on turbocharging and direct injection, and it may even bring a couple of diesels to the United States as part of midcycle changes.

Also, because Honda and Nissan are installing continuously variable transmissions in their mainstream vehicles, expect Toyota to follow suit.

Across the lineup, President Akio Toyoda's call for more expressive styling and weight reduction will become apparent.

Here is a look at Toyota's product plan through the 2016 model year:

Yaris: It was redesigned in fall 2011.

iQ EV: Toyota Division will get an electric version of the Scion iQ in late 2012. But with a projected range of about 50 miles, it will only be sold to commercial fleets that have a short route and centralized charging system.

Corolla: The redesign is set for fall 2013. Expect livelier design above the rocker panels and a more stylish interior layout. But the chassis--and the car's numb suspension--will remain mostly the same. A new transmission family is in the works, with gearing designed to stretch fuel economy. But the existing engine will carry over, with the possibility of more advanced engines coming with the midcycle change planned for the 2016 model year. Weight-saving is a priority.

Matrix: The Corolla offshoot likely will be killed after the current generation. It may carry on for a year after the current Corolla is redesigned, but no successor is planned.

Celica: A convertible or turbocharged performance version of the Scion FR-S coupe was considered, but it didn't make economic sense given the limited volumes. But such versions could be built for the Japanese and European markets.

Camry: It was redesigned in fall 2011.

Avalon: A redesign arrives this fall with swoopy, fastback styling aimed at rescuing the Avalon from its Japanese Buick label. It will ride on a 111-inch wheelbase, same as the current model, but is shorter overall because of shorter front and rear overhangs.

Although slightly narrower and lower in height, rear-seat legroom is still spacious. Among its features are 10 standard airbags, a blind-spot warning system, precollision warnings, a hand-stitched instrument panel and a sport-driving mode with quicker throttle response and more dynamic steering inputs. Weight has been reduced by 120 pounds.

Prius: A plug-in version of the Prius arrived in spring. When the full redesign comes in spring 2014, the Prius likely will move to a lithium ion battery pack. Toyota has been wedded to nickel-metal hydride, but advances in lithium--and Toyota's partnership with Tesla--will push the Prius into the new battery technology. The downscaling and weight reduction of key components used in the Prius C will help enable the next-generation Prius to be lighter and more efficient. The current Prius has a relatively high center of gravity, but lowering the engine and cowl point presents a difficult engineering challenge. The NS4 concept from the 2012 Detroit auto show is the first attempt to realize that architecture.

Because it shares much of its chassis layout with the Corolla, the next-generation Prius could be assembled at Toyota's new plant in Mississippi, where Corollas are built.

Prius C: It was launched in spring 2012. No changes are planned.

Prius V: It was launched in summer 2011.

RAV4: The redesign will be unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show in November and will arrive in showrooms in early 2013. With the compact crossover segment splitting into larger and smaller variants, expect the RAV4 to stay comparably large--almost the size of the original Highlander. The optional 3.5-liter V6 made the current RAV4 a hot rod, but its share of the sales mix is low, and the V6 provides more power than the vehicle needs. The 2013 model probably will be available only with the 2.5-liter four-banger. The emphasis will be on weight reduction and improved aerodynamics for fuel efficiency.

This summer, Toyota will launch an electric version of the RAV4 with a 100-mile range. The RAV4 EV was co-developed with Tesla Motors using the old RAV4 platform.

Highlander: Toyota is pushing the five-year cycle to nearly six years, meaning a redesign will come in fall 2013 off the new Camry platform. Both four- and six-cylinder engine offerings will remain, especially as fuel economy concerns increase volume for the three-row, four-cylinder version. A hybrid powertrain will remain.

Venza: It will be re-engineered in 2015.

Sienna: It was redesigned for the 2011 model year.

FJ Cruiser: This is a one-generation vehicle. It runs on the same line as the 4Runner, with outsourced bodywork, so Toyota will keep building it until there is no more demand.

4Runner: It was redesigned for the 2010 model year.

Sequoia: The SUV will be re-engineered for the 2014 model year. Though based on the Tundra, there had been rumors of moving it onto the Land Cruiser platform--or even a car-based vehicle. But Toyota will stick with its truck-based recipe.

Land Cruiser: No major changes are expected.

Tacoma: The Tacoma soldiers on until a fall 2014 redesign that is required for safety and emissions standards. The platform is linked with Prado, 4Runner and Hi-Lux in the rest of the world, with frames built in different widths for different markets. The United States will get a weight-reduction program and a restyling.

Tundra: No major changes are expected until the spring 2013 re-engineering. Toyota will call it a full redesign, but the V8 powertrains and suspension will remain the same, and the ladder frame dimensions won't change much.

Toyota will keep to a two V8 strategy because it needs the beefy 5.7-liter for towing capacity. But expect Toyota to start pushing the 4.0-liter V6 version hard for corporate average fuel economy reasons, using direct injection to boost horsepower from its current 270 to more than 300. A larger fuel tank will increase range. Expect more "trucky" styling. Toyota is still talking with partner Hino about a diesel variant for the next generation, but overall volumes will need to increase first.

2008 Toyota Highlander: New model is bigger and brawnier

PHOENIX -- The original Toyota Highlander was one of the first crossovers to reach the market, but its design and driving dynamics were bland.

For the 2008 model year, Toyota has redesigned the Highlander to be bigger, brasher and bolder than its predecessor.

The basics: The Highlander has grown considerably, from being based on the old Camry to being mounted on the recent Avalon platform. The new version is 4 inches longer, 3 inches wider and an inch taller. Interior volume increased by 41 cubic feet.

But this growth comes with a weight penalty. Depending on the trim level, the Highlander has added as much as 450 pounds of curb weight.

To move this metal, Toyota replaced the 3.3-liter V-6 with a 3.5-liter engine that also powers the Camry and Avalon. It is teamed with a five-speed automatic transmission. The brake discs are larger. And Toyota has deleted the underpowered price-leader four-cylinder engine, making the price of entry steeper.

Notable features: The redesigned Highlander comes in a hybrid version. The 270-hp hybrid powertrain is mostly carryover, with numerous refinements.

As for the interior of both models, the second-row "center seat" is removable and cleverly slides into a cubbyhole below the center console between the front seats. The second row seats also fold, recline and slide.

Among the standard features on the new Highlander: a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 10 cupholders and a CD player with six speakers.

Standard features include cruise control, electric power steering, 10 cupholders, 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, a CD player with six speakers, auto-off halogen headlamps, keyless door locks, power windows and mirrors and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The tailgate has a separate glass hatch that opens independently.

Standard safety features include seven airbags, ABS, traction control, vehicle stability system, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, hill-start assist and downhill assist. For purists, the traction and stability systems can be turned off. "Active" headrests move to restrict whiplash in a rear-end collision.

What Toyota says: "The next-generation Highlander has a more upscale image," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division general manager, at a press event here. "Customers wanted a roomier and more comfortable interior, more interior without compromising economy (and) a more forceful styling statement."

Compromises: The four-cylinder version generated less than 20 percent of Highlander sales. But given the price of gasoline, Toyota may regret dropping it. Toyota hopes the larger RAV4 will eliminate the need for a base model Highlander, but executives say the four-banger Highlander can be revived if needed.

The hybrid powered model illustrates Toyota's decision to calibrate hybrids for power as much as fuel economy. Whereas the old version could reach 30 mpg in easy driving, an hour-long test drive of the 2008 model netted less than 28 mpg.

Nuts and bolts: The standard Highlander arrives in July, and the Highlander Hybrid debuts in October. Toyota expects annual sales of 105,000 standard models, plus 28,000 hybrids.

The skinny: The new model is a big improvement, but fuel economy will take a hit in an era of rising gasoline prices. Toyota styling aims for sophistication over dynamism, meaning some folks will see it as bland. But the typical Toyota buyer will see it as a perfect fit for a growing family.

Toyota Highlander launches six months early

 Toyota will launch production of a redesigned Highlander crossover in fall 2009 at its factory in Indiana. The 2008 model Highlander is shown.

Despite a sluggish SUV market, Toyota will start U.S. production of the Highlander six months early in order to keep its Indiana workers busy.

Toyota originally planned to begin building the Highlander at its new factory under construction near Tupelo, Miss., in late 2009 or early 2010. But when rising gas prices squashed demand for SUVs, Toyota pushed back the timetable to May 2010.

Considering the Highlander is due for a major refresh in 2010, the move also saved Toyota from having to retool the Tupelo factory less than a year after its opening.

But now that Toyota has decided to build the Highlander at its Princeton, Ind., factory, start of production is back to fall of 2009. The Tupelo factory will produce the Prius hybrid instead, beginning in fall 2010.

"We need to get those people working. That's the bottom line," said Steve St. Angelo, senior vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc.

"And that's why it made more sense to send the Highlander to Indiana, because the tools are ready, and we can get those people working versus keeping it in Mississippi."

Toyota halted production of the Tundra pickup truck and Sequoia SUV at the Princeton factory and Tundra trucks in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 8, in response to slumping sales. Workers are in training mode there until production resumes in November.

St. Angelo said some workers from Princeton and San Antonio, as well as the Alabama engine factory that supplies them, have volunteered to work at Subaru's Indiana factory that also builds Camrys. Others are working temporarily at Toyota's Georgetown, Ky., factory, he said.

"I don't anticipate us laying off any people," St. Angelo said. "Hopefully--and I can't predict the future--the bad stuff is behind us, and we can stabilize, train and pick up again in a month or so."

Magazine names best cars for families

To select the best cars for families, U.S. News & World Report researchers looked at quality, space and the number of family-friendly features. Since families have different needs, the survey reviewed various types of cars from compact sedans, crossovers, minivans and large SUVs before picking a winner in each category.

We've tested many of the winners listed below and would agree with most of these selections. Just about every major manufacturer is represented in at least one category. General Motors led the way, winning six out of 19 categories.

Absent from the list are any Kia or Hyundai models. We've been testing a Hyundai Santa Fe for more than six months now and feel it would make a nice addition to the results.

2014 Toyota Highlander Limited review notes

DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: Following the Corolla, Toyota has another very solid core vehicle redesign on its hands with the Highlander. Exciting it isn't, but everything a premium three-row crossover shopper could want is available, particularly in this Limited with Platinum Package edition.

Let's talk interior, since the outside is typically inoffensive -- you'll neither love it nor hate it, thus removing a potential purchase objection by default. Where my previous Highlander experience was one of nasty plastics, this Limited is a lovely place in which to spend time. An expansive open shelf runs 2/3 the length of the dash in one of those simple yet ridiculously useful ideas no one else uses -- it's perfect for cell phones, wallets and other items occupants might want to stow yet have easy access to.

In the rear, folding and sliding second-row seats offer tons of legroom when the third row isn't needed (90 percent of the time) yet allows you to customize the interior space for the needs of various occupants. An easy seat-side slider permits third-row inmates to easily tip and slide the second row for ingress/egress, and once they're reclined a bit those rear seats are reasonably comfortable and spacious for the occasional use they're likely to see.

On the open road the Highlander is, in a word, unobtrusive. Everything is just a little better than the segment average -- it's quieter, feels slightly faster and handles bumps and curves with just a bit more confidence. Those who know me know I'm not prone to waxing eloquent about the merits of Toyota transportation appliances, but the Highlander's utter competence is remarkable in its completeness. It's like the world's best accountant -- it'll never make the opposite sex swoon, but you can count on it absolutely in every situation.

Yes, our tester was expensive but it was also about as loaded as one could option a 2015 Toyota Highlander -- realistic transaction prices for a nice one will likely parallel those of the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Hyundai Santa Fe in the high $30K range, and the Highlander is arguably better than any of them.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander Limited is a solid core vehicle redesign for the Toyota lineup.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: I was pleasantly surprised by this 2015 Toyota Highlander -- this is a hell of an improvement and way less boring than the outgoing Highlander. No, it's not cheap, but is illustrative of the length and expense people might go to so they don't drive a minivan.

The exterior looks a lot better being far more handsome and angular. On the inside there is better build quality and interesting shapes plus more soft-touch materials on the dash and armrests and such. I really like the little shelf running the width of the dash, which is handy for storing small stuff. All the controls are perfectly logical to use and feel like decent quality -- it took about a minute to figure out the functions. That's nice for a change.

It's unremarkable to drive (that's why I mention the minivan above), though is almost Lexus-quiet on the road and feels quite a bit more solid/robust than the outgoing model. The body motions also feel a lot better controlled than I remember in previous Highlanders.

In sum, it's not thrilling -- it's about as inoffensive as these things get. Plus it's less Sienna-like and as I said, quite a bit less dull. And no doubt it'd last a long time.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander Limited comes in at a base price of $44,450 with our tester topping off at $46,156.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: “Didn't realize you took home a minivan last night,” my roommate told me as he was getting ready to take off for the day. He wasn't trying to be snarky -- he simply didn't realize that the 2015 Toyota Highlander is totally, definitely an SUV and not a minivan.

Or do most Highlander buyers not realize that their three-row people-hauler is a minivan, not an SUV? I'm not sure. The Highlander isn't too sure, either. Its unibody construction meant it was always more Sienna than FJ Cruiser. Yet its styling was decidedly trucklike, at least when it was introduced in 2000.

Now in its third iteration, the Highlander -- whatever it is -- has settled down to become a handsome vehicle. Its interior coddles like a nice van: Quiet, functional, not too much hard plastic. Exterior sculpting is more butch from nose to tail, though, and driving position is somewhat more upright.

Driving is an un-taxing experience, with the smooth V6 punching well above its stated 248 lb-ft of torque. It never sounds particularly stressed; perhaps Toyota has figured out how to perfectly dial in its eight-speed gearbox.

The Highlander isn't going to see rock-crawling duty any time soon, and there are no silly “sport lines” in this loaded model's build sheet. But it'll handle whatever suburban task you hand it, whether that's carting people, groceries or landscaping supplies.

If you've absolutely loved what we've had to say about our long-term Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec tester, but can't or won't stomach the $81,705 as-tested price, this Toyota Highlander Limited with Platinum Package is a possible compromise. You won't get that massive Tristar on the grille or the premium-feeling interior, and the Toyota's not quite as big inside (though you don't lose as much cargo capacity as its substantially shorter wheelbase would suggest).

But you will enjoy a smooth powertrain, a shape that is not unpleasant to the eye and three-row functionality without the stigma of minivan ownership.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander Limited is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: I went on the launch of this car in California, and found it adequate in every area, but excelling in none. It's an average SUV for someone who wants good view of their surroundings, decent mileage and relative comfort, along with some family and storage space.

The third-generation Highlander got a redesign, which adds a little bit of flair into an otherwise tame blueprint. The big front intake makes it look a little more aggressive, and the fog lights on the Limited trim set the look off well. In back, it's very similar to the last generation. I will admit that the profile view looks sharp. The side sheetmetal looks muscular and the window shape adds to the sleekness.

Power is fine from the V6. It's better if you keep it in sport mode. The eight-speed transmission is basically smooth, and fuel mileage seems acceptable for this class of vehicle.

Inside, the seats are comfy -- taking a page out of the Lexus book -- and you really do get a good view of the road. The new infotainment setup is easy to use and the climate controls are simple to understand. I like the cord pass through in the dash for phone chargers and the panoramic sunroof, too.

This particular SUV is still a little too plain for me, but it's a fine vehicle in all other respects. Would I buy it? No. I still like the Ford Explorer better, and if I was thinking cheaper and smaller, the Mazda CX-5.

Toyota and GM recall nearly 1.3 million vehicles over airbag issues

Toyota is recalling certain RAV4, Yaris, Highlander, Tacoma, Corolla, and Matrix models in the U.S. market, part of a larger global recall campaign, for an issue that could prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of an accident. General Motors is recalling Pontiac Vibe vehicles for the same problem; the Vibe is mechanically similar to the Matrix because the two shared a platform and were built at the same plant.

The steering column assembly in these vehicles contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module that's located in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a flexible flat cable. Because of the shape and location of the cable's retainer, the cable could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. That damage could in turn break the connection to the driver's airbag module, located in the steering wheel, and the airbag could be deactivated. This poses a risk of injury to the driver in crashes where the airbag would normally deploy.

The affected vehicles include particular Toyota RAV4 CUVs made between 2006 and 2008, certain Yaris sedans and hatches made between 2006 and 2010, Highlander SUVs made between 2008 and 2010, and Tacoma trucks made between 2009 and 2010. In addition, the recall includes Toyota Corolla and Matrix, as well as Pontiac Vibe models made between 2009 and 2010.

Toyota and General Motors are in the process of notifying owners of affected vehicles. Toyota owners should expect to receive an interim notification letter in late April, and another letter will be sent when the remedy parts are available. General Motors has not mentioned yet when it will start notifying Pontiac Vibe owners of this recall.

The fix will be implemented at the dealer level, and it will consist of the replacement of the spiral-cable assembly. If you own a Toyota vehicle from model years cited above, you can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 about this recall. Owners of the Pontiac Vibe can contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.

2014 Toyota Highlander Hybrid to start at $46,370

Between the sexy Jaguar F-Type Coupe and the SLS AMG Final Edition reveals at the LA Auto Show, Toyota took the wraps off its 2014 Highlander Hybrid SUV. For 2014, the hybrid will get a small bump in price from $46,370 to $47,300, not including destination.

The Highlander gets a light refresh for 2014, especially in the front fascia where the headlights are elongated, the grille gets wider and the fog lights get lower. In the back, the taillights extend farther onto the sides of the vehicle, the window is more rounded and the lower lights go from rectangles to circles. All the changes do wonders to improve the car's looks compared to the 2013 model.

The 3.5-liter V6 remains in Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system, and all hybrid models are equipped with electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. Enhancements have also been made to the suspension and power steering. MacPherson struts do work in the front; the back gets a double wishbone setup.

An SUV this big needs to have a decent amount of entertainment for the passengers. The Highlander comes with Toyota's Entune JBL Audio sound system with navigation and an app suite. It also gets an 8-inch touchscreen and an available Blu-Ray player with RCA inputs. Also inside, the seven-passenger SUV has perforated leather seats in the first two rows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, second row captain's chairs and a 60/40 split third row.

The Highlander Hybrid Platinum model adds a moonroof, heated steering wheel and heated second row for a price of $49,790. The new hybrid will be in showrooms in February 2014.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander will make its debut at the New York auto show.

The three-row crossover hasn't been redesigned since 2007.

Toyota hasn't released any information on the new Highlander. We expected both the four- and six-cylinder engines and the hybrid to remain as powertrain options, keeping it inline with federal fuel-economy mandates.

The Highlander is based on the Camry platform, which saw a redesign in 2013. If the Highlander follows the lead of the new Camry, we would also expect to see electric power steering, a refined interior and standard audio system with a 6-inch screen.

The 2013 New York auto show runs from March 29-April 7 and is expected to attract a range of production and concept cars such as the new Toyota Highlander, Jeep Cherokee and the United States debut of the Corvette Stingray Convertible. Toyota recalls Highlander and Lexus hybrids, IS and GS sedans

Toyota announced two recalls on Wednesday that include 369,000 vehicles worldwide, 235,000 of which are in the United States. The hybrids have a problem with a transistor, while the 3.5-liter V6 is having problems with its variable valve timing control device.

The first recall includes Highlander Hybrid models from 2006-2010 and the Lexus RX 400h from 2006-2008. The transistors, according to Toyota, can trigger a warning that will cause the vehicle to shut down unexpectedly. If this happens on the road, it could cause an accident, though no accidents or injuries have been reported so far.

The second recall is for the Lexus IS 350, IS 350C and GS 350 models made from 2006-2011. The cars have a problem with bolts in the variable valve timing device coming loose, which could also cause the car to stop unexpectedly.

Owners of these vehicles will be notified by mail. More information is available at www.toyota.com/recall or by calling the Toyota Customer Experience Center at (800) 331-4331.

LA Auto Show recap

 The Bentley Continental GT3 made it's North American Debut in LA.

The 2012 LA Auto Show is behind us. It wasn't quite as exciting as the LA show has been in the past, but there were plenty of interesting cars on display. We've compiled the highlights below:

Production Cars

A diverse set of production vehicles debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, with everything from the refreshed 2013 Honda Civic to the 2014 Jaguar XFR-S appearing for the first time.

This gallery provides a taste of the view from the floor. To read up on all of the production and concept vehicles making their debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, head to our special show coverage section.

1. 2013 Honda Civic

—The 2013 Honda Civic, which debuted at the LA Auto Show, gets a mid-cycle refresh after the last update was met with a lukewarm public reception. The 2013 model gets a modified exterior and a substantially reworked interior.

2. 2014 Mazda 6 diesel

—American buyers will have one more oil-burner to choose from following the stateside debut of the 2014 Mazda 6 diesel at the LA Auto Show.

3. 2014 Porsche Cayman

—The second-generation Porsche Cayman, revealed to the public at the LA Auto Show, is both lighter and larger than its predecessor.

4. 2013 Toyota RAV4

—The popular Toyota RAV4 gets a styling update and loses its V6 engine as it enters its fourth generation. The 2013 Toyota RAV4, which we saw for the first time at the LA Auto Show, also gains a rear liftgate. What did Kanye say about the RAV4? Never mind.

5. 2014 Kia Forte sedan

—The 2014 Kia Forte sedan ably demonstrates that economy cars don't need to be completely bland. The attractive compact, which debuted at the LA Auto Show, gets 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter inline-four engine options.

6. 2013 Fiat 500L

—If you like the styling of the Fiat 500 but need a bit more interior space, the 2013 Fiat 500L—26 inches longer than the original—might be the car for you. We got a good look at the vehicle at the LA Auto Show.

7. 2014 Acura RLX

—The 2014 Acura RLX is considered by the automaker to be its luxury flagship. The front-wheel drive version gets a 310 hp V6, while the all-wheel drive RLX gets a 370 hp engine. A hybrid will be available as well.

8. 2014 Jaguar XFR-S

—The very blue 2014 Jaguar XFR-S sedan unveiled in Los Angeles promises lots and lots of carbon fiber-trimmed performance courtesy of a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 good for 550 hp.

9. 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible

—With a turbocharged inline-four diesel option complementing available inline-five and turbo four gasoline engines, the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible isn't a complete drag to drive. The public got its first official taste of the car at the LA Auto Show.

10. 2014 Nissan GT-R

—Changes to the 2014 Nisan GT-R are evolutionary, not revolutionary. The North American version of the car, which debuted at the LA Auto Show, features stiffer suspension and improved engine response.

Concept Cars

The Los Angeles Auto Show has historically been a popular venue for automakers to unveil their newest green concepts. This year was no different: BMW brought its i3 coupe concept, while Mercedes-Benz re-imagined the iconic G-class with the Ener-G-Force.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Bentley showed off its glorious, Continental GT3 racing prototype. This is the first time the track-prepped concept has been shown in North America.

1. BMW i3 coupe

—The BMW i3 coupe concept, which debuted at the LA Auto Show, strongly suggests that that the German automaker intends to expand its fledgling alternative-power i-brand.

2. Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force

—No production date was given for the Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force concept vehicle. Rather, the futuristic SUV is meant to preview what might come as the German automaker rethinks the iconic G-class.

3. Hyundai C3 Roll Top

—The Hyundai Veloster C3 Roll Top concept attempts to capitalize on the nationwide fixed-gear bike craze that you may or may not be aware of. The car, which was debuted at the LA Auto Show, features a fabric convertible top and a cargo area meant for transporting a bicycle.

4. Bentley Continental GT3

—The North American public gets a good look at the Bentley Continental GT3 racing concept at the LA Auto Show. The car, which represents the luxury automaker's return to motorsport, will hit the track next year.

5. LA Auto Show Design Challenge 2012: Highway Patrol Edition

—The 2012 LA Auto Show Design Challenge asked automakers to develop the highway patrol vehicle of 2025. Results ranged from “plausive” to “wild Anime fantasy.”

Toyota, Scion models see slight price increase for 2013: Camry, Prius C get new features

 The Scion xB's price increases to $18,505 with new interior and exterior features.

Toyota and Scion will be charging slightly more for certain models in 2013. And we mean slightly—the greatest change is a $500 bump up on the Scion xB and Toyota Sequoia SUV.

The Camry sedan, Prius C hybrid subcompact and Scion xB utility vehicle all offer new features for 2013, causing the price increase.

The Camry sedan will increase by $150 to a base price of $23,030, and the hybrid variant will increase by $165 for a $26,935 base price. With the increase comes Display Audio with a LCD touchscreen as standard equipment. The Camry SE will also feature a blind-spot-monitoring system that includes rear cross-traffic alert. The turn signal will also change to include a lane-changing setting that signals three times and shuts off automatically. The interior will see an upgrade with improved color matching and ivory seat inserts. Leather-equipped models will have updated stitching accents on the door panels, and all Camry models will receive updated door trim.

The 2013 Camry arrives in dealerships in early January.

The Prius C hybrid compact car also sees a price increase of $130. The base Prius C will now cost $19,210 when it arrives in dealerships January. Upgrades include a black SofTex dash panel on the Prius C Two and Three models, and standard SofTex-trimmed steering wheel on the top-of-the-line Prius C Four.

Additional features on the 2013 Scion xB include a new front bumper, glossy black lower grille, integrated LED accent lighting and a rear bumper with a black diffuser for a sportier look. Also, Absolutely red and Nautical blue metallic are added to the paint lineup to replace Stingray metallic and Elusive blue metallic. On the inside, the xB will feature light-bronze metallic accents on panels, chrome accents on the air-condition register and new seat fabric. Technology upgrades include an optional premium audio system. As a result, the 2013 Scion xB price is $18,505 , a $500 increase.

2008 Highlander Hybrid: Well-equipped models will cost you

Prices for Toyota?s 2008 Highlander Hybrid sport/utility vehicle will decrease slightly for buyers of base models, but will spike by 9.3 percent for those who like their utes well equipped.

Highlander Hybrid will be offered in Base and Limited grades, powered by a 3.3-liter V6 with four-wheel drive with intelligence (4WD-i) that delivers 270 hp. Newly added technological innovation features such as an EV Mode, ECON Mode, more safety features, and Hybrid System Indicator assist the driver to enhance fuel economy and driving experience.

The Highlander Hybrid base 4WD-i model will start at $33,700, a decrease of $190, or 0.6 percent over the previous generation comparably equipped model. The range-topping Limited 4wd i-model will carry a base price of $39,950, an increase of $3,400 or 9.3 percent.

Toyota says the 2008 Highlander Hybrid offers best-in-class fuel economy and emissions, in a more powerful, roomier, quieter and more comfortable package.

The Highlander Hybrid will arrive in dealerships in early October.

2014 Toyota Highlander drive review

What is it?

The 2014 Toyota Highlander marks the beginning of the third generation of the family SUV that debuted in 2001. The new people hauler gets a restyled exterior, more technology inside and out, and a few quirky features that could make traveling with the family a lot more manageable.

Three engine configurations are available, starting with the 2.7-liter I4. It's only offered on the LE trim and makes 185 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Fuel mileage is rated at 25 mpg combined. The next step up, power-wise, is the 3.5-liter V6. It makes 270 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque and also returns 25 mpg.

Finally, the Highlander hybrid comes with the 3.5-liter V6 and three electric motors. One is driven by the engine and powers the other two, the second pushes the front wheels and the third motivates the rear wheels. Total system power is rated at 280 hp, while fuel mileage goes up to 28 mpg combined. Six-speed transmissions are standard with the four and six; the hybrid gets a CVT.

The previous full-time four-wheel drive is ditched in favor of an on-demand system that can send up to 50 percent of the torque to the rear wheels. A lock mode holds power at 50/50 and turns off automatically at 25 mph. A “snow mode” button allows for easier takeoffs in the slippery stuff.

Three trims are offered in addition to the hybrid and LE: LE plus, XLE and Limited. The hybrid is based on the Limited trim with the Platinum options, including safety features from the Driver Tech Package, giant panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel and heated second-row seats.

The 2014 Highlander will seat eight passengers with a second-row bench seat that's standard. And with the third and/or second row folded, the Highlander will still swallow a ton of cargo.

With blind-spot indicators, rear cross-traffic sensors and lane-departure warnings, Toyota expects the Highlander to get a five-star safety rating from NHTSA and a top safety pick from IIHS. There are eight airbags.

Toyota expects to sell about 140,000 Highlanders in 2014, 90 percent of which, they predict, will carry some form of the V6.

What's it like to drive?

The first press car we sat in was the standard V6 with Bridgestone tires. This is notable because the Highlander gets a mix of Bridgestones, Michelins and Toyos, and we heard a lot of road noise with the first set. The Toyos and Michelins were both quieter and better performers.

Thrust was more than adequate from the sixer, but unlike other semi-powerful SUVs, its suspension was tight enough that it didn't have a lot of pitch or roll. The throttle tip-in was also well modulated for smooth takeoffs.

This Highlander uses MacPherson struts up front, with retuned coil springs and a double wishbone setup in back. The coil springs were relocated, which frees up a little more interior room.

Steering was weighted properly and felt direct for a bigger SUV. Again, the tires seemed to make a difference, the Michelins being our favorites. Bumps were absorbed well, with little jounce or noise coming into the cabin. There was a tad bit of torque steer on hard launches, but that's kept in check easily, even with one hand on the wheel. Always better to have too much than too little.

The hybrid offered about the same handling feel, even with a few extra pounds to carry around. The brakes, though, were extremely impressive. For the first time, we had to ask if they helped in battery regeneration and were surprised when they did, because we could barely feel a difference.

Finally, we drove the four-cylinder-equipped model and instantly felt another few hundred pounds slough off. It felt the nimblest of the group. Also wearing Michelins, it never felt sluggish, either, even with just 185 hp. It was the least-equipped of the group, with cloth seats and less tech than the rest.

Do I want one?

The 2014 Highlander LE starts at $30,075 with the four-cylinder; the basic V6 jumps to $31,380. The Limited tops out at $42,000, with all-wheel drive. The hybrid is the most expensive, at $48,160, including destination.

Those prices line up the SUV closely with the Chevy Traverse and Mazda CX-9, though the Mazda only tops out in the mid-30K range. The Mazda is definitely the sportiest of the three, but the Highlander is an easy second.

Even though the third row in the Highlander is small, we still would put the vehicle atop the family hauler list. Some of the more clever features include a parcel shelf in front that has a pass-through hole for power cords. It also gets the secondary rearview mirror to check on the kids, in addition to Driver Easy Speak, which allows the driver to talk through an amplifying microphone to the passengers in the last row. My co-driver and I had plenty of fun yelling at our imaginary kids: “Shut up back there or we'll turn this Highlander around!”

We think the sheetmetal took a big step up on this new model, though the final verdict is up to you. The entire front fascia was restyled, now sporting huge headlights that wrap around the sides. The rear was revamped as well, adding a more contemporary look.

If your family has five or six, or is looking to add some kids, the Highlander will do just fine. And the hybrid's 28 mpg combined is nothing to sneeze at. Whether you pick it over the multitude of other midsize SUVs, is up to you.

2008 Toyota Highlander LTD

 The Toyota Highlander is plenty comfortable, but could use some more performance.

OUR TAKE: Toyota has recently taken some serious knocks. The word is that the company is growing too fast and is suffering the consequences, which in Toyota's case goes to its core ethos: quality and reliability.

This Highlander, apparently, is the first product to benefit from the firm's reworked quality initiative. What's that mean? The engineers spend 30 more days working out the developmental/design/function kinks before even releasing the vehicle. Does it cost? Sure, but the potential hit to the company's reputation is far costlier.

We found no problem with this big dog's reputation, or so there shouldn't be at first drive. Comfort and legroom abound, and there are a bunch of clever features included, like the sliding second row. We had to chuckle, however, at the size of the knobs on the center console. They're HUGE.

Performance could've used a bit of an increase in size. Some staffers went so far to say they had to double-check that it wasn't a hybrid Highlander they were driving, and not simply because of how quiet it is once you push the ignition button. Unfortunately, with 4300 pounds at the curb, the Highlander needs the assistance of the driver working the automanual when time comes to scoot. It will get the job done, and without protestations, but you have to be ready to work a bit.

Many on staff said they take vehicles like the Mazda CX-9 and GM's new line of utes over the Highlander, but as a trucky alternative to a minivan, the Highlander will definitely appeal to a lot of folks.

BOTTOM LINE: The Highlander is the perfect example of utility and comfort in something that makes you feel like going days without shaving while "roughing it" in mountain country. Its manliness is palpable, yet its around-town driving comfort is on par with the finest sedans.
